If you’re looking for carpet cleaning in Redmond, WA, you may notice that different companies describe their services very differently.

One company advertises a basic carpet cleaning.

Another talks about deep cleaning.

Another charges extra for spots, traffic areas or deodorizing.

And sometimes it’s difficult to tell exactly what you’re getting until someone is already standing in your home.

I’ve been professionally cleaning carpets in Redmond since 1986, and I think homeowners should have a pretty clear idea of what they’re paying for before the cleaning begins.

So if you’re comparing Redmond carpet cleaning companies, here’s what I believe a professional residential carpet cleaning should actually include—and a few things you should ask about before scheduling.

🏠 It Should Start With Looking at the Carpet

Before I start cleaning, I want to see what I’m dealing with.

Two Redmond homes with approximately the same amount of carpet can require very different cleaning.

I’m looking at things such as:

  • Carpet construction and condition
  • Heavily traveled areas
  • Spots and stains
  • Pet-related problems
  • Stairs and hallways
  • Areas of unusual wear
  • Previous cleaning residue
  • Anything that may require special attention

This is also the time to identify problems that cleaning may not correct.

For example, a dark traffic lane might be heavily soiled—or the carpet fibers themselves may be worn.

A professional carpet cleaner should be able to explain the difference rather than simply promising everything will look new again.

🧹 Heavily Traveled Areas Should Get Extra Attention

Carpet doesn’t get dirty evenly.

Think about how you move through your own home.

The path from the kitchen to the family room probably gets considerably more traffic than the corner behind a chair.

Hallways get more traffic than many bedrooms.

Stairs can get an enormous amount of concentrated foot traffic.

Those areas may require more attention than lightly used sections of carpet.

That’s one reason I don’t believe professional carpet cleaning should mean simply running the same equipment over every square foot at exactly the same speed.

The cleaning should reflect the actual condition of the carpet.

🧴 Routine Spot Treatment Should Be Part of the Job

Almost every home has spots.

Coffee gets spilled.

Food gets dropped.

Something gets tracked in from outside.

Kids and pets have accidents.

I consider normal spot treatment part of professionally cleaning carpet.

There are certainly unusual stains and specialty situations that may require additional treatment, but I don’t think every ordinary spot should become another opportunity to add something to the bill.

If a stain is unlikely to come out completely, I also think the homeowner should know that.

A good carpet cleaner should be willing to give you realistic expectations.

🐾 Pet Stains and Odors Are Different

Pet urine is one area where normal carpet cleaning may not be enough.

The visible spot on top of the carpet doesn’t necessarily tell you how far the urine traveled underneath.

Depending on the severity, contamination can reach the carpet backing and potentially materials below it.

That’s why it’s important to mention known pet problems when you’re requesting an estimate rather than waiting until the cleaning begins.

It allows the cleaner to determine whether ordinary cleaning is appropriate or whether additional pet stain and odor treatment may be necessary.

💧 Deep Cleaning Shouldn’t Mean Soaking Your Carpet

I think homeowners sometimes assume that a carpet must be extremely wet to have been thoroughly cleaned.

I don’t agree.

The goal is to remove the soil from the carpet—not put as much water into it as possible.

Our low-moisture cleaning process is designed to thoroughly clean the carpet while typically allowing it to dry in approximately 1–2 hours.

That means you don’t have to plan your entire day around wet carpet.

It’s especially convenient in frequently used rooms where you’d like to get your home back to normal quickly.

If you’d like a more complete explanation of what you should expect from the entire service, I’ve put together a guide to professional residential carpet cleaning.

✨ What About Deodorizing?

There’s a difference between making something smell pleasant and actually addressing the source of an odor.

If a carpet simply needs freshening, that’s fairly straightforward.

If you’re dealing with pet urine or another contamination issue, masking the odor with fragrance isn’t the same thing as correcting the underlying problem.

That’s why I want to know what caused the odor whenever possible.

Treating the cause makes more sense than simply trying to cover it up.

🛋️ Does Professional Carpet Cleaning Include Moving Furniture?

This is something I’d ask before hiring any carpet cleaning company because policies vary.

Some furniture can be moved relatively easily.

Other furniture should probably remain where it is.

Large beds, electronics, antiques, extremely heavy furniture and fragile pieces are examples where cleaning around the item may make considerably more sense.

Most homeowners simply move smaller items beforehand and have the accessible carpet cleaned.

The important thing isn’t that every carpet cleaner have the same furniture policy.

It’s that you know the policy before the appointment.

Your carpet cleaner shouldn’t surprise you once the job has started.

🔍 What If the Carpet Is Really Dirty?

Don’t automatically assume heavily soiled carpet needs to be replaced.

I’ve cleaned plenty of carpet over the years that looked pretty bad before we started and improved dramatically after cleaning.

The key question is whether you’re looking at soil or permanent wear.

Accumulated soil can be removed.

Worn-out carpet fibers can’t be recreated.

The same applies to bleaching, permanent color loss and physical fiber damage.

If your carpet has dark traffic lanes, years of accumulated soil or numerous old spots, it may require more extensive deep cleaning than routinely maintained carpet.

But it can still be worth finding out what professional cleaning can accomplish before spending thousands of dollars replacing it.

💰 What Should Be Included in the Carpet Cleaning Price?

This is where comparing carpet cleaning companies can get confusing.

One company might give you a low starting price and then charge separately for things you assumed were part of the cleaning.

Another may include more in the original quote.

Neither pricing structure automatically tells you which company is better.

What matters is knowing what you’re buying.

Before scheduling, I’d want to know:

  • Which rooms and areas are included?
  • How are stairs priced?
  • Is routine spot treatment included?
  • Are traffic areas extra?
  • What could result in additional charges?
  • Is pet treatment separate?
  • Will I know the price before the cleaning begins?

If you’re comparing companies, my article about what should be included in a professional carpet cleaning estimate goes into this in considerably more detail.

👤 Find Out Who Is Actually Coming Into Your Home

This may not technically be part of the cleaning process, but I think it’s one of the most important things to know.

Who’s doing the work?

Is it an experienced carpet cleaner?

A newer technician?

An employee?

The owner?

I’ve had employees perform residential carpet cleaning for me in the past. Eventually, I decided nobody was going to care quite as much about the quality of Complete Carpet Care’s work as I do.

So I went back to personally performing our residential cleaning.

When you schedule with me, you know who is coming into your home.

I’ve written more about why I think there can be advantages to choosing an owner-operated carpet cleaning company.

⭐ What Should Your Carpet Look and Feel Like Afterwards?

Obviously, it should look cleaner.

Heavily traveled areas should improve.

Removable spots should be gone or substantially improved.

The carpet should look refreshed.

But there are a couple of less obvious things I’d pay attention to.

The carpet shouldn’t feel sticky from excessive cleaning-product residue.

And it shouldn’t still be soaking wet late into the evening.

Our process typically leaves carpet dry in approximately 1–2 hours, which is one reason many homeowners appreciate low-moisture cleaning.

Most importantly, the result should match the expectations you and the carpet cleaner established before the job began.

📋 What I’d Ask a Redmond Carpet Cleaner Before Scheduling

You don’t need to conduct a 30-minute interview.

A few straightforward questions will tell you quite a bit:

What’s included in the quoted price?

Do you charge extra for routine spots or traffic areas?

How long should my carpet take to dry?

How do you handle pet urine or odor problems?

Who will actually perform the cleaning?

Are there stains or carpet conditions you can’t correct?

The answers should be understandable.

After more than 40 years in this business, I’ve found that carpet cleaning doesn’t need to be complicated for the customer.

⭐ My Advice After 40 Years of Cleaning Carpet

If you’re hiring someone to clean your carpet, you shouldn’t have to wonder what you’re buying.

You should understand the price.

You should know what’s included.

You should know approximately how long the carpet will take to dry.

And if there are areas that aren’t likely to clean up perfectly, your carpet cleaner should be willing to tell you that.

That’s how I’d want someone to treat me in my own home.

And it’s how I’ve tried to operate Complete Carpet Care since I started cleaning carpets in 1986.
