carpet cleaning residue

Carpet cleaning residue – Is it even an issue anymore?

Residue left from carpet cleaning used to be an issue in Seattle-Bellevue area homes.  In the 1960’s and 70’s many companies were using shampoo which was left in the carpet and turned the carpet into a sticky dirt magnet.  In the 1980’s truck mount steam cleaning really took off but many of the cleaning solutions used still left a soapy residue.  I still remember a local carpet cleaning company (who’s still in business) and they were using Tide laundry detergent back then. But by the 1990’s and into the 2000’s most all carpet cleaning companies were using technologically advanced products and issues with residue in carpets has really become a thing of the past.

Most all residue issues today are caused by homeowners using their own machines to clean their carpets.  The idea usually is if the carpets really dirty “more soap is better” so often times home owners use more detergent than recommended.  Unfortunately once all that soap is in the carpet it’s nearly impossible to remove it all.  The carpets then attract soil so they are cleaned more often with more soap and it becomes a vicious circle.

Still today some carpet cleaning companies have based their whole business model on scare tactics about outdated concerns regarding residue.

Residues from carpet cleaning agents can pose significant risks to human health and the environment. These residues can be left behind due to improper cleaning or inadequate rinsing of the carpet. Some of the most common residues include chemicals, detergents, and solvents that are used in the cleaning process.

Chemicals and Detergents

Carpet cleaning agents often contain chemicals and detergents that can leave behind residues on carpets. These residues can be hazardous to human health, especially for people with allergies, asthma, and chemical sensitivities. The chemicals and detergents can cause skin irritation, eye irritation, respiratory problems, and allergic reactions.

One of the most commonly used chemicals in carpet cleaning agents is sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). SLES is a surfactant that is used to remove dirt and stains from carpets. However, SLES can leave behind a residue that can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions.

Solvents

Solvents are used in carpet cleaning agents to dissolve dirt and stains. These solvents can also leave behind residues that can be harmful to human health and the environment. Some of the most commonly used solvents include perchloroethylene (PERC), naphthalene, and benzene.

PERC is a chlorinated solvent that is commonly used in dry cleaning and carpet cleaning. PERC can cause respiratory problems, neurological problems, and cancer. Naphthalene is a solvent that is used in mothballs and carpet cleaning. Naphthalene can cause skin irritation, respiratory problems, and liver damage. Benzene is a solvent that is used in some carpet cleaning agents. Benzene can cause cancer, leukemia, and other health problems.

Environmental Concerns

Residues from carpet cleaning agents can also pose significant risks to the environment. These residues can contaminate soil, water, and air. The chemicals and solvents can also harm wildlife and aquatic life.

Sodium laureth sulfate and other surfactants can harm aquatic life by reducing the surface tension of water. This can interfere with the ability of aquatic organisms to float, swim, and breathe. PERC and other solvents can also contaminate soil and water, leading to environmental degradation.

Precautions to Take

To minimize the risks of residues from carpet cleaning, it is essential to take some precautions. Firstly, choose a reputable carpet cleaning company that uses environmentally friendly products.

Secondly, The carpet should be dried completely to prevent mold growth. Open windows and doors to ensure proper ventilation during and after cleaning.

Lastly, vacuum the carpet regularly to remove dirt and debris. This will reduce the need for deep cleaning and limit the use of carpet cleaning agents.

In conclusion, residues from carpet cleaning residue can pose significant risks to human health and the environment. It is crucial to take precautions when cleaning carpets to minimize the risks of residues. Choose environmentally friendly products, and vacuum regularly. By taking these precautions, you can enjoy clean carpets without compromising your health or the environment.

filtration soiling

Dust filtration

Dust filtration lines are those unsightly black lines that can appear on carpets around the edges of rooms, under doors, or along the baseboards in Lake Stevens-Marysville area homes. They are caused by air passing through the carpet and depositing fine dust and soil particles. The particles are too small to be seen individually, but they accumulate over time to create a visible line. These lines can be difficult to remove, but with proper treatment and preventive measures, they can be minimized or avoided altogether.

Causes of Dust Filtration Lines

Dust filtration lines are caused by a combination of factors that allow dust and soil particles to accumulate along the edges of carpets. These factors include:

  1. Airflow: When air flows through a room, it can carry dust and soil particles with it. As the air passes through the carpet, the particles settle along the edges, creating a line. Often there’s gaps under the carpet where the floor and wall meet particularly on staircases, and the pressurized air in the home gets pushed into those gaps and the carpet filters out the fine dust particles.  You can see this also where a door has been kept closed, the carpet filters the air passing under the door leaving a dark line.
  2. Static Electricity: Carpets can develop a static charge that attracts dust and soil particles. This is particularly true in dry environments or when the carpet is rubbed against other surfaces, such as when vacuuming.
  3. Insufficient Vacuuming: If a carpet is not vacuumed regularly, dust and soil particles can accumulate in the fibers. When air passes through the carpet, it can push these particles along the edges, creating a line.

Treatment of Dust Filtration Lines

Removing dust filtration lines can be a challenging task. Here are some steps that can help:

  1. Vacuuming: Regular vacuuming is the best way to prevent and minimize dust filtration lines. When vacuuming, be sure to use a vacuum cleaner with good suction, a HEPA filter and an agitator brush. Pay particular attention to the edges of the carpet, under doors, and along the baseboards.
  2. Spot Cleaning: If you notice dust filtration lines on your carpet, try spot cleaning them with a carpet cleaning solution. Mix the solution according to the manufacturer’s instructions and apply it to the affected areas. Use a clean, white cloth to blot the area, working from the outside in to prevent spreading the stain.
  3. Professional Cleaning: If the dust filtration lines are particularly stubborn, it may be necessary to have the carpet professionally cleaned. A professional carpet cleaning company may offer a specialized filtration cleaning service since regular carpet cleaning doesn’t remove filtration.  Even with a specialized service it’s not likely that all the filtration can be completely removed as the fine dust particles become embedded in the pores of the fibers creating a permanent discoloration.

Prevention of Dust Filtration Lines

dust filtration

Preventing dust filtration lines is the best way to avoid the need for treatment. Here are some steps you can take to prevent dust filtration lines from forming:

  1. Change Air Filters: Regularly changing the air filters (every 3 months) in your HVAC system can help to reduce the amount of dust and soil particles in the air. This can reduce the amount of dust that settles on your carpet and help to prevent the formation of dust filtration lines. Use high quality HEPA filters.
  2. Control Humidity: Maintaining a consistent humidity level in your home can help to reduce static electricity and prevent dust and soil particles from sticking to your carpet. Use a humidifier in dry environments or a dehumidifier in humid environments to maintain the proper humidity level.
  3. Seal Baseboards: Sealing the baseboards in your home can help to prevent air from flowing under them and depositing dust and soil particles on your carpet. Use a sealant or caulk to seal any gaps or cracks around the baseboards.
  4. Use Mats: Placing mats at the entrances to your home can help to prevent dirt and soil from being tracked onto your carpet. Be sure to clean the mats regularly to prevent them from becoming a source of dust and soil particles.
  5. Air Purifier: Placing air purifiers in your home will help to clean the air of the fine particles and reduce the filtration in the carpets.
  6. Carpet Cleaning:  For homes prone to filtration soiling, regular frequent professional carpet cleaning (every 6-12 months) will help reduce the particulates in your home and thereby reduce the filtration soiling.

Conclusion

Dust filtration lines can be an unsightly nuisance on carpets, but with proper treatment and prevention, they can be minimized or avoided altogether. Regular vacuuming, cleaning, and professional carpet cleaning can help to remove dust filtration lines, while changing air filters, controlling humidity, sealing baseboards

carpet cleaning technology

Carpet cleaning technology

Carpets have been a staple of Bothell-Mill Creek home decor for years. They provide warmth, comfort, and aesthetic appeal to any room. However, with the many benefits of carpeting come the challenges of keeping them clean. Fortunately, over the last 60 years, advancements in carpet cleaning technologies have made it easier and more effective to maintain the cleanliness of carpets.

Back before wall-to-wall carpeting became popular in the 1960’s rugs were used and the common cleaning process was shampooing them.  With all the soap residue left in the rugs it unfortunately turned the rugs into dirt magnets.

I still remember back when ads for homes for sale would mention the “wall-to-wall carpeting” as a deluxe feature.

In the 1960s, the primary method of carpet cleaning continued to be shampooing. This involved using a rotary machine that spread shampoo onto the carpet fibers and then removed the dirty solution with a wet vacuum. While this method was effective at removing surface dirt and stains, it was time-consuming and required a lot of water, making it difficult to dry the carpet properly and left a lot of residue.

The late 1960s also saw the introduction of steam cleaning, which is also known as hot water extraction. This method involved injecting hot water and detergent into the carpet fibers, loosening dirt and debris, and then removing the solution with a high-powered vacuum. This method was more effective at removing dirt and stains and used less water than shampooing. Drying times were improved but still took a long time.  Initially this was done with portable machines, but soon the truck mounted machines became popular.

In the early 1980s, carbonated cleaning technology was introduced. This method involved using a carbonated solution that lifted dirt and debris to the surface of the carpet fibers, where it could be easily removed with a vacuum. This method was effective at removing deep-down dirt and stains and was environmentally friendly.

In the late 1980s, encapsulation technology was introduced. This involved using a low-moisture solution that encapsulated dirt and other debris. The carpets were scrubbed clean using a rotary or counter-rotating brush machine. This method became  popular as it allowed for faster cleaning times, faster drying and reduced downtime for the space being cleaned. The advancements with crystalizing solutions resulted in a revolutionary low moisture carpet cleaning cleaning process.

The 1990s saw the introduction of dry powder cleaning. This method involved spreading a dry powder onto the carpet fibers, which absorbed dirt and debris. The powder was then removed with a vacuum. This method was effective at removing surface dirt and stains but was less effective at deep cleaning.

In recent years, advancements in technology have led to the introduction of new carpet cleaning methods. One such method is the use of ultraviolet light to clean carpets. This involves using a machine that emits UV light, which kills bacteria and other microorganisms that can cause odors and stains.

Another new technology is the use of robotics for carpet cleaning. Robotic cleaners use sensors to navigate and clean carpets, eliminating the need for human intervention. This method is still in its early stages but shows promise for reducing labor costs and increasing efficiency.

In conclusion, over the last 60 years, advancements in carpet cleaning technologies have made it easier and more effective to maintain the cleanliness of carpets. From shampooing and steam cleaning to encapsulation and carbonated cleaning, each new technology has built upon the successes of the previous one. Today, new technologies like ultraviolet light and robotics are changing the way carpets are cleaned, and we can expect even more advancements in the future.

Can carpets cause allergies?

carpets cause allergies
Carpets are a popular choice for flooring in many Redmond-Woodinville households due to their aesthetic appeal and the warmth and comfort they provide. However, some people are concerned that carpets may cause allergies. In this post, we will examine whether carpets can cause allergies, and if so, what steps can be taken to reduce the risk of an allergic reaction.

What are allergies?
Allergies are an overreaction of the body’s immune system to a substance that is usually harmless. When the immune system encounters an allergen, it produces antibodies that cause the release of histamine and other chemicals, which can lead to symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itching, and swelling. Common allergens include pollen, dust mites, mold spores, and pet dander.

Can carpets cause allergies?
Carpets can act as a reservoir for allergens, such as dust mites, mold spores, pollen and pet dander, which can accumulate in the fibers over time. When people walk or vacuum over the carpet, these allergens can be released into the air, causing allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

Dust mites are one of the most common allergens found in carpets. These tiny creatures feed on dead skin cells and thrive in warm, humid environments, such as carpets. Dust mites produce waste products that can trigger allergies in some people. Additionally, mold can grow in damp carpets, releasing spores into the air that can cause respiratory problems.

Dust mites have an unsegmented, round bodies with mouthparts that are highly adapted to feeding on the dead scales of human skin found in household dust. They have eight legs and are relatives of spiders and scorpions. They are smaller than full stops and therefore invisible to the naked eye. Millions of dust mites live inside furniture and fabric in the average home. The dead bodies and excrement of dust mites can cause allergic reactions to household dust. Magnification: x100 when printed 10 centimetres wide.)

Pet dander, another common allergen found in carpets, is composed of tiny particles of skin and hair shed by animals. These particles can become embedded in carpet fibers and become airborne when disturbed.

Steps to reduce the risk of allergic reactions:
There are several steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of allergic reactions from carpets:

Regular cleaning: Regular vacuuming with a HEPA filter can help remove dust, pollen, and pet dander from carpets. It is recommended to vacuum at least once a week, or more frequently in high-traffic areas.

Deep cleaning: Deep cleaning, such as carpet cleaning, can help remove allergens that have become embedded in carpet fibers. It is recommended to deep clean carpets at least once a year, or more frequently in households with pets or allergies. Unfortunately common steam carpet cleaning processes don’t kill dust mites. To kill dust mites with hot water requires boiling for one minute.  A quick millisecond spray of water which is immediately extracted doesn’t kill anything, bacteria, germs and viruses included. The oxygen powered carpet cleaning used by Complete Carpet Care does kill the dust mites, germs, bacteria and viruses.

Reduce humidity: Dust mites and mold thrive in humid environments, so reducing indoor humidity can help prevent their growth. Keeping indoor humidity levels below 50% can help control allergen levels.

Use area rugs: Using area rugs instead of wall-to-wall carpeting can reduce the amount of allergens in a room. Area rugs can be removed and cleaned more easily than wall-to-wall carpeting.

Furnace filters: It’s important to regularly change your furnace filters (typically every 3 months) to ensure your home’s air is being cleaned.  Use the higher quality filters to collect more allergens out of the air.

Air purifier: Air purifiers filter the air thoroughly using carbon and Hepa filters to remove odors and allergens out of the air in your home.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, carpets can act as a reservoir for allergens and can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. However, by taking the steps outlined above, such as regular cleaning and reducing humidity, it is possible to reduce the risk of allergic reactions from carpets.

Importance of Green Carpet Cleaning

eco-friendly carpet cleaning

Carpet cleaning is an essential part of maintaining a clean and healthy indoor environment in the Sammamish-Issaquah area. Regular cleaning not only improves the appearance of carpets but also helps to remove dirt, dust, and other allergens that can cause respiratory problems. However, not all carpet cleaning methods are created equal. Traditional carpet cleaning methods often involve the use of harsh chemicals that can be harmful to the environment and our health. This is where green carpet cleaning comes in. In this article, we will discuss the importance of green carpet cleaning and its benefits.

What is Green Carpet Cleaning?

Green carpet cleaning refers to the use of eco-friendly cleaning methods and products that are safe for both the environment and our health. Traditional carpet cleaning methods typically use harsh chemicals that can be harmful to the environment and human health. In contrast, green methods use natural and non-toxic cleaning solutions that are just as effective as traditional methods.

The Importance of Green Carpet Cleaning:

  1. Environmental Benefits:

Traditional carpet cleaning methods often involve the use of chemicals that can pollute the environment. These chemicals can enter our waterways, soil, and air, leading to pollution and harm to wildlife. Green methods use eco-friendly cleaning solutions that are safe for the environment and do not contribute to pollution.

By using eco-friendly cleaning solutions, we can ensure that we are not contributing to pollution, and we are creating a safe and healthy indoor environment for ourselves and our families. In addition, green carpet cleaning can save us money in the long run by increasing the lifespan of our carpets and reducing cleaning costs. So, the next time you need to clean your carpets, consider using these methods and products for a safer, healthier, and cleaner home.

Ironically some like to companies promote their “Eco-Friendly” carpet cleaning, yet they roll up in a big rig that gets 10 miles per gallon. Then they run a big gas powered machine adding greenhouse gases to the air, then proceed to clean the carpets with 30-100 gallons of fresh water that are wastefully dumped down the drain, along with harmful cleaning products often containing phosphates, antibacterials and solvents, which all end up in Puget Sound.

With salmon runs getting worse year by year and the impact on the Orcas who feed on them, this isn’t helping matters. Just think, hundreds of carpets around the Puget Sound basin are cleaned this way every day, needlessly adding thousands of gallons of polluted water into Puget Sound. Waste treatment facilities break down the bacteria, but the cleaning products go right through. Steam cleaning simply isn’t “Eco-friendly.”

We take caring for the environment inside your home as seriously as outside your home. Our hybrid vehicles get 50 MPG and our machines run on electricity, and we can clean the carpets in an entire home with 2 gallons of water and no waste water goes down the drain into Puget Sound.

Puget Sound need not suffer for us to keep our carpets clean.

Carpet cleaning is an essential task for maintaining a healthy and hygienic environment in our Bellevue-Mercer Island homes and workplaces. Carpets are one of the most commonly used flooring materials, and they can harbor a wide range of pollutants, including dust, dirt, bacteria, and allergens. Regular carpet cleaning not only helps to remove these pollutants but also helps to extend the life of the carpet, improving its appearance and overall performance. In this post, we will discuss the importance of carpet cleaning, the different methods of carpet cleaning, and some tips for maintaining clean carpets.

Importance of Carpet Cleaning:

Carpets are made up of fibers that can trap and hold onto dirt, dust, and other contaminants that can affect the indoor air quality. When carpets are not cleaned regularly, these pollutants can accumulate and lead to various health problems such as respiratory issues, allergies, and skin irritations. Furthermore, carpets can also harbor mold and mildew, which can cause serious health problems.

Regular carpet cleaning helps to eliminate these pollutants and maintain a healthy indoor environment. It also helps to improve the appearance and lifespan of the carpet. Carpets that are not cleaned regularly can become discolored and worn out, which can reduce their aesthetic appeal and their overall functionality.

Different Methods of Carpet Cleaning:

There are several methods of carpet cleaning, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The most common methods of carpet cleaning include:

  1. Hot water extraction: This method involves using hot water and a cleaning solution to deep clean the carpet. A machine is used to spray the water and solution onto the carpet, and then the machine sucks up the water and dirt using a high-powered vacuum.

  1. Vacuum regularly: Regular vacuuming helps to remove dirt and other contaminants from the carpet before they become embedded.
  2. Spot clean spills immediately: Spills should be cleaned up immediately to prevent them from becoming stains.
  3. Use entrance mats: Entrance mats can help to trap dirt and other contaminants before they enter the home or workplace.
  4. Remove shoes: Shoes can track in dirt and other contaminants, so it is a good idea to remove them before entering the home or workplace.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, carpet cleaning is an essential task for maintaining a healthy and hygienic indoor environment. Regular cleaning helps to remove pollutants and extend the life of the carpet. There are several methods of carpet cleaning, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. It is important to choose a method that is appropriate for your carpet and your cleaning needs. Green Carpet Cleaning

green carpet cleaning

What is green carpet cleaning?

Green carpet cleaning is a cleaning method that uses environmentally-friendly products and techniques to clean carpets. It is also known as eco-friendly carpet cleaning or sustainable carpet cleaning. The goal  is to reduce the use of harmful chemicals and decrease water usage while still providing effective carpet cleaning in the Bothell-Mill Creek area.

How does green carpet cleaning work?

Green carpet cleaning methods use cleaning products that are made from natural and non-toxic ingredients such as plant-based solutions. These solutions are biodegradable and safer for humans, pets, and the environment. They are also effective in removing dirt, stains, and odors from carpets.

These methods also tend to use less water than traditional methods. The process involves spraying the cleaning solution onto the carpet fibers and then using a machine to agitate the fibers and remove the dirt and stains. The machine then extracts the cleaning solution and any dirt and debris from the carpet. The carpet is left to dry naturally, reducing the need for excessive water usage.

What are the benefits of green carpet cleaning?

  1. Environmentally friendly: Products used are safe for the environment. The products are biodegradable and do not contain harmful chemicals, reducing the environmental impact of the cleaning process.
  2. Safer for people and pets: The products do not contain harmful chemicals, making them safe for people and pets. Traditional cleaning products can contain chemicals that can cause respiratory problems, skin irritation, and other health issues.
  3. Effective: This method is  just as effective as traditional cleaning methods in removing dirt, stains, and odors from carpets.
  4. Reduces water usage: This method uses less water than traditional methods. This reduces the amount of wastewater produced and conserves water resources.
  5. Improves indoor air quality: methods help to improve indoor air quality by removing dust, dirt, and allergens from carpets.

Conclusion

Green carpet cleaning is an environmentally-friendly and safe method of cleaning carpets. It uses natural and non-toxic cleaning products and techniques to effectively remove dirt, stains, and odors from carpets. These methods also reduce water usage and improve indoor air quality. Overall, this method is a sustainable and healthier approach to carpet cleaning that benefits both people and the environment.

Today most carpet cleaning is done with big gas guzzling vans and gas powered machines producing greenhouse gases with the waste water being dumped down the drain often containing Butyl’s, phosphates and solvents (carpets can’t be cleaned with water alone no matter how special it is).  While waste treatment facilities breakdown bacteria, the harmful chemicals go right through and into Puget Sound negatively impacting salmon and the Orcas who feed on them. 40% of Puget Sound salmon runs have already gone extinct, in part due to pollution.

Our carpet cleaning service uses hybrid vehicles and electric machines and no waste water goes down the drain and into Puget Sound. You can’t get a greener, more environmentally friendly carpet cleaning.
